Holy Martyrs Martha and Mary, sisters, and Venerable Martyr Lycarion
Two sisters who, according to tradition, taught the Christian faith among women and were put to death for it, together with the monk Lycarion.
Biography
The sisters Martha and Mary were found guilty by pagans for having devoted their lives to spreading the Christian faith among women. At their trial, the governor feigned pity and urged them to have mercy on their youth.
They answered that everyone loses their life eventually, but woe to whoever loses their soul. The governor then ordered them first crucified and then beheaded, before pagans who admired their courage.
Some Synaxaria note that a young monk named Lycarion was martyred with them in the same way.
