Holy Martyrs Philetus the Senator, his wife Lydia, their sons Macedon and Theoprepius, Amphilochius the Duke and Cronides the Jailer

The senator Philetus, his wife Lydia and their two sons, together with the duke Amphilochius and the jailer Cronides, who were martyred under Emperor Hadrian (early 2nd century).

Biography

The senator Philetus, his wife Lydia and their two children were arrested in the year 125, under Hadrian, and refused to renounce Christ. They were handed over to the duke Amphilochius, who had them hung up and flayed; witnessing this, the jailer Cronides believed in Christ and was imprisoned together with them.

According to tradition, Amphilochius then ordered them thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil and resin, but the cauldron went cold as soon as the martyrs made the sign of the cross; seeing the miracle, he too believed and threw himself into the cauldron.

When the emperor learned that they had survived unharmed, he set them free, and they spent the rest of their lives in prayer.
