Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene of Lesvos
Martyrs of Lesvos (1463), commemorated on the Tuesday after Easter.
Biography
Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene were martyred on Lesvos in 1463, shortly after the fall of Constantinople, when Ottoman forces attacked the monastery at Thermi where Raphael served as abbot. Their existence became known only in 1959–60, through visions that led to the discovery of their relics.
According to these revelations, Raphael was a former Byzantine army officer who had become a monk, Nicholas was his novice, and Irene was a twelve-year-old girl from Thermi who was martyred together with her family on the Tuesday after Easter in 1463.
