4th century
The Seven Holy Martyrs of Amisus (Alexandra, Claudia, Euphrasia, Matrona, Juliana, Euphemia, Theodora)
Seven Christian women of Amisus in Pontus, Claudia among them, who were martyred during the persecution under Maximian in the early 4th century, put to death, according to tradition, by fire.
Biography
The seven women were martyred at Amisus in Pontus in the time of Emperor Maximian, between 303 and 305, during a fierce persecution of Christians.
They were arrested by the city's pagan governor and, when they boldly professed their faith before him, he ordered them tortured in public. In the end they were thrown into a blazing furnace, singing hymns and praying to God to the very last.
In the sources, the name Theodora is sometimes given instead as Theodosia.
