The Prophet Zechariah and the Righteous Elizabeth

The parents of Saint John the Baptist.

Biography

Zechariah was a priest in Jerusalem in the days of Herod; according to John Chrysostom and other Church Fathers, he was in fact the high priest. He and his wife Elizabeth were childless in old age. While he was burning incense in the temple, an angel announced that he would have a son, John; because he doubted, he was struck mute until the child was born.

When the time came to name the boy, Zechariah wrote "John" on a tablet, and his speech was immediately restored. The Gospel of Luke describes him as righteous before God, living blamelessly according to His commandments.
