Pope of Rome who backed the condemnation of Nestorius at the Third Ecumenical Council and furthered the Christianization of Ireland.

Biography

Celestine was born in Rome and, after distinguishing himself as a deacon for his learning and piety, became pope of Rome in 422. He worked actively against heresies, helped end Pelagianism in Britain, and supported the mission that brought Christianity to Ireland.

At the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus, through his representatives, he backed the condemnation of Nestorius's error. He also took care of clerical discipline and worship, adorning churches with icons and sacred vessels. He died in 432, under Emperor Theodosius II.
