16th–17th century
Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos
Archbishop of Aegina (1547–1622) and patron saint of Zakynthos, known for forgiving his brother's murderer.
Biography
Dionysios was born in 1547 on Zakynthos into a well-off family, under the secular name Draganigos (or Gradenigos) Sigouros. He became a monk at the Strofades monastery under the name Daniel and was later ordained a priest.
In 1577, while travelling to Athens on his way to Jerusalem, his preaching so impressed Archbishop Nikanoras that he made him bishop of Aegina, giving him the name Dionysios. He later also served as temporary bishop of Zakynthos before retiring to a monastery on the island.
According to tradition, when the murderer of his brother Constantine took refuge, unaware of the relationship, in the monastery where Dionysios was abbot, Dionysios hid him and helped him escape, granting him forgiveness — which earned him the title "Saint of Forgiveness". He died in 1622, and his relics were found incorrupt.
