Saint Dorotheus the Hieromartyr, Bishop of Tyre
Bishop of Tyre who survived the persecution of Diocletian and, according to tradition, was martyred at a great age under Julian the Apostate.
Biography
Dorotheus was Bishop of Tyre, learned in the Old and New Testaments. During Diocletian's persecution, at his flock's urgent request, he withdrew to Dysso in Thrace, where he lived as an ascetic until the persecution passed, then returned to care for widows, orphans and the sick. In 325 he took part in the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea.
He lived on into the reign of Julian the Apostate, who favoured pagans; they seized Dorotheus, tortured him and killed him in 362, at the age of 107. He is credited with an ecclesiastical work on the Seventy Disciples of Christ.
