8th–9th century
Saint James the Confessor
A bishop harshly persecuted during the years of Iconoclasm, who remained unshaken in his faith to the end.
Biography
James lived as an ascetic from a young age and stood out for the purity of his life and his devotion to the teachings of the faith. During the years of Iconoclasm he became a bishop and suffered harsh persecution, at times deprived even of bread.
Despite this hardship, his resolve never wavered; remembering the Apostle Paul's call to endure suffering 'as a good soldier' of Christ, he remained steadfast in his confession to the end of his life.
