Saint Thomas I of Constantinople

Patriarch of Constantinople in the early seventh century, known for his piety and theological learning.

Biography

Thomas lived in the seventh century and stood out early for his piety and theological grounding, gifts that Patriarch John the Faster valued, ordaining him deacon and then sakellarios.

In 607 he succeeded Cyriacus on the patriarchal throne of Constantinople. He built the patriarchal residence beside Hagia Sophia together with the Patriarchate's library, and guided his flock for three years, contending against heretics, until his death around 610.
