4th–5th century
Saint John Chrysostom
Archbishop of Constantinople and one of the Three Holy Hierarchs.
Biography
John (c. 347–407) was born in Antioch. The eloquence of his preaching earned him the name Chrysostom, “golden-mouthed”.
He became archbishop of Constantinople in 398. He clashed with the imperial court and was exiled, dying in exile at Comana in Pontus in 407. The Divine Liturgy celebrated on most Sundays bears his name.
He is commemorated on 13 November, on 27 January (the translation of his relics) and, with the Three Holy Hierarchs, on 30 January.
