Holy Martyr Chryse (Aurea) of Ostia
A Christian woman of noble birth martyred at Ostia near Rome under Claudius II (c. 269), thrown into the sea with a stone tied to her neck; in the West she is venerated under the Latin name Aurea.
Biography
Chryse came from a noble family and was martyred around 269 under Emperor Claudius. According to tradition, when she was arrested as a Christian her torturers cut her sides open, burned the wounds with torches and broke her jaw with stones.
She was finally thrown into the sea with a stone tied around her neck. In the West she is venerated at Ostia near Rome under the Latin name Aurea ('golden'); a church was built over her tomb, and her name survives in an ancient Christian inscription found there.
According to tradition, at Ostia Aurea helped free an imprisoned Christian from his chains and raised a shoemaker's dead son back to life, miracles that led others to be baptised.
