Saint Maximus the Confessor

Monk and theologian (c. 580–662).

Biography

Maximus was a senior official at the imperial court in Constantinople who became a monk and one of the greatest theologians of the Church.

He opposed the teaching of monothelitism, for which he was tried, mutilated and died in exile in 662. His position was vindicated at the Sixth Ecumenical Council (680–681).
