3rd century
Saints Eugenios, Valerian, Candidus and Aquila of Trebizond
Martyrs of Trebizond who were tortured under Diocletian for refusing to deny Christ and were beheaded in 292.
Biography
Saints Eugenios, Valerian, Candidus and Aquila hid in the mountains above Trebizond during the persecution of Diocletian, but were captured and, refusing to renounce Christ, were first exiled to the fortress of Pityus. Brought back to Trebizond, the prefect Lysias had them flogged and tortured with iron and fire.
They remained steadfast in their faith and were finally beheaded in AD 292. Eugenios later became the patron saint of Trebizond, credited with miracles such as helping defend the city against the Seljuk Turks in 1224.
