Saint Sabbas of Stagira

An Athonite monk from Stagira who foresaw his death in a vision and was killed by the Ottomans in 1821.

Biography

Sabbas was born in Stagira, Chalkidiki, in the late eighteenth century and became a monk at the Konstamonitou monastery on Mount Athos, dedicated to the Protomartyr Stephen.

During the Chalkidiki uprising of 1821, Sabbas had foreseen his own death in a vision. Indeed, as he was passing near the Zograf monastery, he was killed by the Ottomans together with another lay servant of the monastery, both natives of Stagira.
